
In his capital Georgia Tbilisi is held today on the occasion International Women’s Day protest marches against the “foreign agents” law. Paper Kartuli estimates that at least 5,000 women are taking part in the marches.
The demonstrators handed out stickers reading “Women Against Total Control”. The procession passed along the central Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi and ended on the square in front of the parliament building. Protests are also taking place in other cities of Georgia. The participants shouted slogans: “Who are we, Georgians! What do we want? – Georgia in Europe!” Among the protesters were the head of the Droa party, Elena Hostaria, and MP Tamara Kornjaya.
Ida Bakhturinye, co-director of Women for a Common Future (WECF)-Georgia, told Radio Liberty: “On this day, we must talk about something else. For example, a problematic article about rape in Georgia, economic problems faced by women. But the government made us face the loss of our future. They threw the Constitution of our country over our heads. They denied us the opportunity to join the European Union.”
The men also participated in the women’s march. The square in front of the Parliament is full of people.
