President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky invited Republican Kevin McCarthy, chairman of the US House of Representatives, to visit Kyiv in the context of intensifying protests by American conservatives against aid to Ukraine, AFP reports.

“Mr. McCarthy needs to come here and see how we work, what’s going on, what the war has done and what people are struggling with now. And only then decide,” Zelensky added in an interview with CNN.

As the leader of the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy is the third most important figure in American politics after the president and vice president.

“I don’t think President McCarthy has ever visited Kyiv or Ukraine, and I think this can help him,” the Ukrainian president added.

But the House Republican leader, narrowly elected in January, told CNN he doesn’t need to visit Ukraine to understand the situation.

In his position, he can obstruct President Joe Biden’s large-scale aid program for Ukraine to fight Russia.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine more than a year ago, the US has provided nearly $100 billion in military, economic and humanitarian aid.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi, McCarthy’s predecessor in office, visited Kyiv in May 2022 to demonstrate her support for Ukraine.
