Philippines: 6 magnitude earthquake hits Mindanao

A strong earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale shook the island of Mindanao in the Philippines at noon Tuesday local time, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The earthquake was shallow, the depth of the focus was estimated at 8 kilometers from the surface. This was noted two minutes after 8 am Greek time.

No casualties have yet been reported in the East Asian island nation, but local authorities are warning of destruction and tremors.

Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines, but the seventh most populous.
