Former Russian President and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev hit back, saying on Monday that Argentina’s fight to “reclaim” the Falkland Islands, Britain’s overseas possession in the South Atlantic over which the British have consolidated sovereignty, is just. war.
In another outburst of anti-Western rhetoric, the acting deputy chairman of Russia’s National Security Council spoke in a Monday article about Britain’s “plague hand” and underscored the legitimacy of Argentina’s request to restore sovereignty over the “Malvinas Islands,” as Argentines call the Falklands.
The rhetoric of Medvedev, who has turned from a dove to a hawk in recent years, is strongly reminiscent of the Cold War era, when the world was divided into two camps, and the Soviet Union tried to support any state that did not join the West, or caused trouble to one Western country.
Recall that in December last year, Mr. Medvedev, who is also president of Putin’s United Russia party, attacked British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak when he again demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
Mr. Medvedev then said that Mr. Sunak’s words were ambiguous and that British troops should be withdrawn from the Falklands.
