His conservative government British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will introduce a new bill on violations tomorrow Tuesday immigrationwhich will mainly aim to prevent those who arrive in the country across the English Channel from seeking asylum in the UK, several newspapers reported.
Despite his promises Brexit “reclaiming control” of the border, the UK is facing a significant increase in the number of incoming irregular migrants. Last year, a record number of more than 45,000 people entered the country across the English Channel, adding to the pressure on Sunak.
The bill, expected within weeks, includes measures to make it easier to detain and deport asylum seekers who illegally enter the UK “as early as possible”, the Times and Daily Mail reported today.
The British government intends to send them to Rwanda under a law already passed but not implemented due to legal issues, or to another country deemed safe. In addition, those who enter the country illegally will be banned from returning to the UK for life.
‘Legal and safe’ routes for asylum seekers under consideration
London is also considering developing new “legitimate and safe” routes for asylum seekers, the Times reported, though no details were given.
“Our measures will be simple in principle and in their implementation: the only way forward for Britain will be in a safe and legal way,” British Immigration Minister Swella Braverman, who has taken a hard line on the issue, said yesterday Sunday.
Asked by Sky News yesterday, Northern Ireland Minister Chris Heaton-Harris said the UK was committed to working with France and other European countries to ensure asylum seekers “remain in the first safe country they go to.”
Sunak is expected to arrive in Paris on Friday for a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Stopping the boats” of illegal migrants is one of five priorities set by the British Prime Minister for the next general election in less than two years.
