“I want to pay special tribute to the courage, strength and endurance of the soldiers fighting in Donbas,” Zelenskyy said in his daily statement on Sunday, adding that it was “one of the most difficult battles.” It’s painful and difficult.”

Despite its strategic importance denied by experts, Bakhmut has become a symbol of the struggle for control over the industrial region of Donbas, which includes Luhansk and Donetsk. Russia annexed it without taking full control over it.

Zelenskyi also thanked the Ukrainian military, which “repelled the assault, destroyed the occupier, weakened the enemy’s positions and logistical support, protected our borders and cities.”

“I thank the entire army, guards, and border guards who protect our state around Bakhmut, Vugledar, Avdiyivka, Siversk, Svatovo, Lyman and Zaporizhzhia,” he added.

The Russian army is suffering colossal losses in the battle for Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told the German daily Bild, dpa reports. (Agerpress)
