Iran: New cases of schoolgirl poisoning

New cases of poisoning of young girls recorded today in several provinces of Iranwhere in this case remains a mystery that causes a strong reaction in the country.

Several female students are reported to have been poisoned at two girls’ secondary schools in the cities of Abahar (west) and Ahvaz (southwest), as well as a primary school in Zanan (west), Isna news agency reported this morning, citing local health officials. officials.

According to the news agencies Mehr and Tasnim, schoolgirls were also poisoned in schools in the holy city of Mashhad (northeast), Shiraz (south) and Isfahan (center). Hundreds of cases of gas poisoning have been reported in 52 school complexes over the past three months, according to official counts.

In a statement released last night, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi spoke about the discovery of “suspicious samples” during “field investigations,” without giving details.

President Ebrahim Raisi on Friday asked the Ministries of Interior and Education to “prevent the enemy’s plot to instill fear and despair in the population.”

Asked by the Fars news agency, Deputy Interior Minister Majid Mirahmadi accused “those who had the idea of poisoning the girls” of wanting to “shut down schools” as well as “blame the system” in order to “rekindle the extinguished flames of unrest.”

The official was referring to the movement that erupted in Iran following the Sept. 16 death of Mahshi Amini, a young woman who was arrested by the vice police on charges of violating a strict dress code requiring women to wear the headscarf.

According to Mirahmadi, a “very small percentage” of poisonings were caused by “deliberate acts,” but a “significant proportion” of schoolgirls suffered complications due to “anxiety and stress.”

A health ministry official said last week that “certain individuals” are seeking to “close all schools, especially schools for girls,” through these actions. This version was not repeated by other officials.

This mysterious case has sparked an outcry from parents of schoolgirls who are worried about their children and are asking the authorities to take action.
