Matthias Deppner, head of the media giant, has announced massive job cuts as part of Axel Springer’s transformation into a digital company. He said there will be significant cuts because automation and artificial intelligence are making some journalism content production jobs redundant.

“AI has the potential to make independent journalism better than ever, or simply replace it,” the CEO warned in an internal letter to employees.

Popular tools like ChatGPT, promise an information revolution and will soon be better at picking up news than humans. “Understanding this shift is essential to the viability of a publishing company. Only those who create the best original content will survive,” added Deppner.

This is not the first group to flirt with artificial intelligence for content production. In January, BuzzFeed announced plans to use artificial intelligence to create its content and online games. Britain’s Daily Mirror and Daily Express plan to follow the same path, their head of the Financial Times said.

Since its launch last November, ChatGPT has amassed more than 100 million users and reinforced the long-held belief that some jobs will disappear due to artificial intelligence. However, its use in journalism has proved controversial at best.

Technology website CNET reported that it used artificial intelligence to create articles that were then edited by editors before publication. The site acknowledged that the program had clear limitations, since almost half of the reports generated by artificial intelligence had to be corrected by editors because they contained many errors.
