Minister of Justice Mr. USA Today Merrick Garland made a surprise visit to Lvov, west. UkraineThis was announced by a senior official of the ministry.
Garland was invited by his Ukrainian colleague and attended, among other things, the United for Justice conference, added the source, who asked not to be named.
The visit was unannounced for security reasons.
The US Secretary of State reiterated that the US is determined to hold Russia accountable “for the crimes it committed as a result of its unjust and unprovoked invasion of a neighboring sovereign country,” the official said.
This is Garland’s second visit to Ukraine in recent months. The US accuses Russia of war crimes and crimes against humanity and supports many Ukrainian and international investigations to this end. U.S. prosecutors are working with their Ukrainian counterparts to investigate these crimes, Garland said in a statement marking the anniversary of the Russian invasion. He recently called Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner mercenary organization, a “war criminal.”
