Russian officials said earlier today, according to state news agencies, that Russian forces are fighting Ukrainian saboteurs in the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine.
The Kremlin said steps were being taken to root out the “Ukrainian terrorists” who attacked across the border and, according to Russian officials, took hostages.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin is regularly informed about the situation by the security services and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Peskov dismissed reports that Putin plans to chair an emergency meeting of the Security Council today, but said he would chair the council tomorrow, Friday, when its regular meeting takes place.
For his part, Ukrainian presidential adviser Volodymyr Zelensky spoke out about the Russian provocation, accusing Moscow of “wanting to scare its people in order to justify attacking another country and increasing poverty after a year of war.”
