UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Iraq on Tuesday, his first visit in six years, to “support efforts” to bring peace to the region, his spokesman in New York said.
“The Secretary General is here to reaffirm the UN’s support for the efforts of the (Government) of Iraq to achieve progress in peace, human rights and sustainable development for all Iraqis,” Stéphane Dujarric said.
António Guterres arrived by plane on Tuesday evening in Baghdad, where he will meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani and representatives of women’s and youth human rights organizations. On Thursday, he will visit a refugee camp in the north of the country, and then travel to Erbil for talks with representatives of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Guterres’ last visit to Iraq was in the spring of 2017.
After that, the UN Secretary General will travel to Qatar, where he will take part in the summit of the Group of the world’s least developed countries.
