Ottawa announced today that it is banning Chinese app TikTok, a product of China’s ByteDance, from all official Canadian government devices on the grounds that it poses a threat to communications privacy and national security.
It is recalled that just a few days earlier, the European Commission announced a similar decision regarding TikTok, while similar bans are now in place in the United States not only at the state level, but also at the federal level.
This decision has added another thorn in Sino-Canadian relations, which are going through a period of tension and friction.
TikTok says, for its part, that it is “disappointed” with the decision, which a spokesman for the Chinese company complains was made “without mentioning the specific security issues associated with TikTok” and “without prior notice (ps Canadian government) with the company to discuss any problem.”
