The UN Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Batili, is launching a new initiative aimed at holding elections this year through the formation of a high-level organizing committee.
Addressing the UN Security Council, Abdullahi Batili stressed that this commission will bring together representatives of political institutions, political and tribal leaders, civil society groups, security officials, etc. under its auspices.
“It can be said that many institutions lost their legitimacy many years ago,” the UN official said, emphasizing the need for elections in the country.
Libya was “partitioned” in 2014 between rival factions, with the last major conflict occurring in 2020.
However, the political process to resolve the conflict has stalled due to the failure of elections scheduled for December 2021.
