President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky on Sunday fired a senior army officer commanding forces fighting the Russians in the eastern part of the country, where fighting is raging, without explaining why.
Zelensky, with his one-line decree, announced the removal of Eduard Moskalev from the post of commander of the joint forces of Ukraine participating in the hostilities in the Donbass.
As recently as Friday, Mr. Zelensky mentioned Eduard Moskalev, listing the commanders he spoke to. Mr. Moskalev was appointed to this post in March 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion.
The combined forces made no mention of the deletion on their social media accounts.
The Russian army is concentrating its efforts on the occupation of the two regions that make up the Donbass. President Zelenskiy describes the situation there as difficult and painful in recent weeks. The center of hostilities is the city of Bahamut.
