Seven people, including a two-year-old boy, his mother and four teenagers, were hit by bullets on a street corner in northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the city’s police chief said Thursday.
According to Daniel Outlow, the most seriously injured victim is a teenager who was hospitalized in critical condition.
The victims were fired on yesterday afternoon, shortly before 6:00 pm (local time; 01:00 today Greek time), a few hundred meters from an elementary school, Ms. Outlaw said, specifying that the incident did not start there.
“As a parent, I understand people’s fear,” the Philadelphia police chief said, without specifying who opened fire or why.
The US pays an extremely high price for the widespread distribution of firearms on its territory and the ease with which Americans can access them.
There are more weapons in the country than inhabitants; every third adult owns at least one weapon, and every second person lives in a family with at least one weapon.
The consequence of their proliferation is an extremely high number of deaths in the United States from firearms per year (from 40,000 to 50,000, half of which are suicides), which cannot be compared with those in other developed countries.
