The US and Europe will have less influence in the future world order, according to a new report from a European think tank.

According to a study published today by the think tank of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), the war in Ukraine has highlighted “drastic geographic differences in the attitude of the international community” to questions of “perceptions of democracy and the composition of the future order of things.”

Data compiled from nine European countries, the UK, China, India, Turkey, Russia and the United States show that while Western allies have “recovered a sense of purpose on the world stage,” the gap between their own perception of things and that of others has widened.

In a survey conducted in December 2022 and January 2023, Europeans and Americans share common views on major global issues, including that they “should help Ukraine win the war,” while citizens of China, India and Turkey prefers a “quick end”. to war,” even if Ukraine is forced to lose territory.

The vast majority of respondents in Western countries (in particular, 77% in the UK, 71% in the US and 65% in nine EU countries) described Russia as an “enemy”.

Conversely, also a large percentage of participants in China (76%), India (77%) and Turkey (73%) see Russia as a strategic “ally” and “partner” and believe Kiev should consider surrendering territory to help end war. conflict faster.

“The paradox of the war in Ukraine is that the West seems to be more united and at the same time less influential in the world than ever before,” said Mark Leonard, director of the think tank.

Less bipolar

There are many different views on the overall role that the West will play in the future world order. In Europe and the US, many (29% in the UK, 28% in nine EU countries and 26% in the US) envision a new world of two poles led by the US and China. While the majority of respondents in non-Western countries see the world of the future as more “multipolar”.

“Those pulling the strings in the West should take into account that the consolidation of the West is taking place in an increasingly divided post-Western world, and that emerging powers such as India and Turkey will act on their own terms,” the researchers say. .
