Eva Kaili’s new lawyer, Sven Marie, insists the MEP won’t run out of evidence if she is released on parole, in an interview he gave to ERT.
When asked about the reasons why the authorities decided that his client should remain in prison, while her defenders argue that there is no evidence, Mr. Marie replies that the first is the authorities’ argument that she will disappear from evidence, and the second is to make contact and collude “with people who could potentially be arrested or testify.”
“I think there are 2,500 pages in the case file, the investigation is moving forward. I don’t know what can disappear. I believe that there is no evidence that he could have made them disappear,” repeated Mr. Marie. Regarding her possible interactions with other “protagonists” of the case or witnesses, Ms Kylie’s lawyer notes that “it could have happened a long time ago.”
“First, Mrs. Kylie she has a cell phonelike the other inmates in the prison. If at some point they want to chat with other people (….), he has a phone and he can do it. But he didn’t. We need to know that all her phone calls are being recorded and tapped by the police. I believe that today, in the case of a matter of concern to us, Ms. Kylie should not have remained in custody all these months.”
“She could easily, after waiting for other people’s hearings, she could be registered in her own home. So she will be able to see her child every day. I think it’s important. We are talking about a child who will soon be two years old.”
For puncheri
Asked about the role of Pier Antonio Panzeri, the Italian MEP who is said to be the “brains” of Qatargate and signed a memorandum of repentance and cooperation with the Belgian authorities, Sven Marie replies that “that remains to be seen.”
“It is not clear. At the beginning of the study, he was assigned a special role. That is, he was called upon to answer a number of questions. Then Mr. Pantseri changed his story. Today he appears with a different line. That is, he expresses remorse, which means he will help the investigation and it must be assumed that he will tell the whole truth. We are surprised to find that when, at the first stage of the investigation, before declaring remorse, Mr. Pancheri said different things, the court said that this was a lie, and when he changed his title and became “repentant”, all that he said – whether he accuses some persons, or he does not accuse and does not defend any others – they are accepted as the truth. It is as if what Mr. Pancheri is saying has suddenly become the word of the gospel.”
ERT correspondent in Brussels, Irene Zarkadula, asked him about his past clients, such as the jihadist terrorist Salah Abdeslam: “So, who is Sven Mari really? A rebellious advocate, as you write in your book, or the devil’s advocate. And why;”
“I am a people’s advocate. What is valuable to me is that every person who is a victim or alleged perpetrator of a crime has the right to protection. As for my role as a lawyer, I do not choose it to please people. I will never become popular defending terrorists. I don’t want to get popular defending someone who’s been attacked with vitriol. My role is not to be popular. My role is to protect the people who need me, and I believe that Eva Kylie needs me. I think I can help her solve the problem she has.”
For communicating with Eva Kylie’s child
Speaking about the daughter of Eva Kylie, the lawyer for the MEP noted that the authorities allow Ms. Kylie to see the child every day for an hour.
“You have to know that a 24-month-old baby still doesn’t understand a lot. When a child goes to jail, he doesn’t understand, he doesn’t know what prison is. But when the visit lasts an hour a day, after 35 minutes you have to prepare the child for the fact that the mother will leave. After 25 minutes the baby is crying. The child is sad and does not understand why the mother is leaving. I think for both Eva Kylie and the child who doesn’t understand what’s going on, it’s suffering because the child runs towards the exit and Eva Kylie goes back to her cell.”
