Thirty-one bodies in two secret mass graves have been exhumed by Mexican authorities in the western part of the country, an area that has been plagued by a spate of organized crime violence for years, prosecutors said Thursday.
“We counted 31 victims,” Jalisco State Attorney Luis Joaquin Mendez told the press, adding that authorities have evidence that allows them to identify about half and turn them over to their families.
The first secret tomb was discovered on February 1 at the site of San Isidro Massatepec in the municipality of Tlachomulco de Zuniga. After several days of searching and digging up the body bags, a second one was found.
The state of Jalisco, whose districts are controlled by the powerful Nea Genia tou Jalisco (KNGH) cartel, has been hit the hardest by the wave of organized crime.
In 2022, 301 bodies were found in 41 secret mass graves, compared to 544 in 2020. That year was a tragic record.
More than 340,000 gang-related murders have been committed in Mexico, according to official figures, since the authorities launched the so-called “war on drugs” in December 2006, deploying military forces inside the country.
