California: Tiny Mouse Recognized as World’s Oldest

The tiny California mouse now holds a major title after earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for longevity.

Pat so named actor Patrick Stewart from Star Trekis endemic to California.

In old age 9 years and 209 daysPat has been officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living mouse in human care.

Pat was born at the San Diego Zoo on July 14, 2013 as part of an animal breeding program.

Chaetodipus californicus is the “pocket” mouse, the smallest species in North America.

And although it has had a wider presence from Los Angeles to the Tijuana River Valley since 1932, its population has drastically declined due to human activities and the destruction of its ecosystems.
