Chaetodipus californicus is the “pocket” mouse, the smallest species in North America.
And although it has had a wider presence from Los Angeles to the Tijuana River Valley since 1932, its population has drastically declined due to human activities and the destruction of its ecosystems.

The Pacific pocket mouse is important to its ecosystem as it disperses the seeds of endemic plants and also digs through the soil to promote their growth.

“This recognition is very important to our group and important to the species,” said Debra Sayer, who initiated and oversees the conservation program. “This is a testament to the dedication and incredible care that our organization provides to every species, from the largest to the smallest.”
