Munich Airport, the second largest in Germany, announced today that all flights will be canceled on Friday due to the strike.
“Due to the strike (…) scheduled flights will not be operated from Friday midnight to Saturday 1 am,” the airport’s operator company said. In total, more than 700 arrivals and departures of passenger aircraft were planned, which will not take place.
Only certain “special” flights for “humanitarian, medical or technical” reasons will be operated, as well as those that will take participants to the Munich Security Summit, which will be held in the city from Friday to Sunday.
The Verdi union has gone on strike at Germany’s seven largest airports as wage talks continue.
Frankfurt Airport predicted there would be “outages” in service and advised passengers not to go there.
The strike also affects the airports of Bremen, Dortmund, Hamburg, Hannover and Stuttgart.
Unions and employers are negotiating higher wages for ground staff and airport security, with the former asking to compensate for the loss of workers’ purchasing power due to higher inflation. Last month, Verdi went on strike at the Berlin airport, causing about 300 flights to be canceled or rescheduled.
