A New York court has sentenced 19-year-old Peyton Gendron to life in prison without parole for killing ten African Americans at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York last May.
The hearing ended in an electrifying atmosphere. A relative of the victim tried to attack the perpetrator of the massacre, but he was stopped by the police, and Gendron temporarily disappeared from the premises.
On May 14, after months of preparation, Peyton Gendron walked into a Tops supermarket dressed in camouflage and armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. He even broadcast his attack directly on an online platform, having previously detailed his plans in a “manifesto” in which he explained that he was inspired by previous racially motivated attacks. He chose this particular supermarket in Buffalo, 300 kilometers from his home, because there are many African Americans living in the area.
Peyton Gendron has also been charged in federal court and, if found guilty, could face the death penalty if the Justice Department seeks it.
