An asteroid named 2023 CX1 exploded shortly after entering Earth’s atmosphere and lit up the skies in both southern Britain and northern France, according to images taken and shared by social media users.
The meter-long space rock exploded early in the morning, around 5 am Greek time, a few kilometers off the coast of France, creating a fireball that broke into smaller pieces, which in turn fell into the sea. .
2023 CX1 was discovered just seven hours before the explosion by Hungarian astronomer Christian Schanecki at the Konkoli Observatory in the Hungarian Matra Mountains.
Sarnetsky first photographed the asteroid on Sunday evening at 10:20 am Greek time, when it was less than 233,000 km from Earth and orbiting the Moon.
