War in Ukraine: Russians claim to have advanced 2km west in 4 days

Russian troops were able to advance 2 kilometers west on the fronts in Ukraine in four days, the Interfax news agency reported on Monday, citing a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russian soldiers “broke the enemy’s resistance and advanced kilometers deep into its multi-level defense,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement. “In four days, the front advanced two kilometers to the west,” he added.

It is not clear on which part of the front, which stretches from south to east of vast Ukrainian territory, the “offensive” that Moscow spoke of took place.

The fighting in recent months has been in the Donetsk region (southeast), which the Kremlin has set itself the goal of taking full control of.

Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine Valery Zaluzny, for his part, said last Saturday that his troops not only hold their positions in Donetsk, but also managed to recapture lost positions in some areas.

However, Ukrainian forces are facing mounting pressure, especially in the town of Bakhmut, where some of the conflict’s bloodiest fighting is reported to be taking place.

The war will end one year in 11 days.

The head of the company of Russian mercenaries, Wagner, said yesterday Sunday that his people had occupied the suburb of Bakhmut. The information is not confirmed in Kyiv.

Yevgeny Prigozhin added that his company would go further and conquer Bakhmut itself, located 7 kilometers away.

On the other hand, the UK Department of Defense tweeted, citing Ukrainian General Staff figures, that Russia “probably” recently suffered “the highest number of casualties since the first week of the invasion” in Bakhmut, which it estimates is “probably accurate” . Russian troops were losing an average of 824 soldiers a day last week, four times more than between June and July, according to the figures he cited. However, Ukraine also “continues to suffer a large number of victims,” he added, without giving figures.

The UK Department of Defense attributed the increase in casualties to a lack of “trained personnel”, “coordination” and “resources at the front”.

Russia dismisses the daily updates published by the British Ministry of Defense, calling them propaganda.
