Amsterdam: end of cannabis use in the Red Light District

City Council of your city Amsterdam announced that soon cannabis use will be completely banned on the roads “Red Lights”where residents have been resenting for years the intense tourist traffic lasting every day until the early hours of the morning, combined with abuses and disturbances of the peace.

The Dutch capital annually receives almost twenty million tourists, and its center, in which there is a street with legal brothels, began to noticeably decline. “The citizens of Amsterdam are suffering from the excessive use of alcohol and drugs by tourists,” the council said in a statement. β€œIn addition, tourists attract illegal drug dealers, which has made some areas dangerous,” he added. The Dutch newspaper Het Parool called the measures historic, stating that “Over the decades, Amsterdam has gained a reputation as a city where everything is allowed and everything is legal. Tourists from all over the world come to the city for the sole purpose of sex and drugs. They piss in the streets, cause a commotion and do not respect the residents,” he writes categorically.

A bill to ban this in Amsterdam’s Red Light District is just around the corner.

In addition to banning cannabis in this particular area, the legislation, which is due to come into effect in the coming months, also includes a number of other restrictions. In particular, brothels will be forced to close at 3 am. instead of 6 am. until today, and cafes, bars and restaurants will have to close at 2 am. on weekdays (instead of closing today at 3am) and at 4am. on Fridays and weekends. The sale of alcohol in any store in the city center will be prohibited after 4 am. Nearly the entire city council is backing the new measures, which will be open for consultation for a month and follow previous efforts to prevent tourists “intent on drinking, going astray and treating the city like an amusement park”, according to Dutch media reports.

The council is still investigating a possible ban on stag parties, and the mayor would like to ban tourists from coffee shops, as is done in other cities across the country.
