In a tense atmosphere on Tuesday (02.07) a meeting of the DISY Politburo was held, the purpose of which was to decide what to do in the second round of the presidential elections. The overwhelming majority of Sinalgerists were in favor of the optional vote, but there was also a small minority who spoke out in support of Christodoulides’ candidacy, while some other top-notch leaders, including the president, photographed the vote for Mavroyiannis.
In favor of Christodoulidis Tornaritis, Prodromos and Zahariou
So far Nikos Christodoulidis has been voted for by DISY parliamentary representative Nikos Tornaritis, Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou and former Larnaca MP Zacharias Zahariou. Mr. Tornaritis spoke about the voluntary vote and specified that he would personally vote for Nikos Christodoulidis. In a social media post, he explained that “if we were faced with a solution to the Cyprus problem in real terms, I would be the first to advise you to vote for the candidate supported by AKEL”, specifying that today everything is very different and the goal of all of us should be it a strong economy, financial discipline and a European and Western orientation of our country.
Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou expressed his stance in favor of supporting Nikos Christodoulidis, resulting in him being flattered by other party officials. In particular, it all started with the fact that at some point Mr. Prodromou left the room, as a result of which a group of people in the lobby began to actively support his political choice. Former Minister of Health Konstantinos Ioannou also supported Nikos Christodoulidis, saying in a statement that the economic, political and social stability achieved during the reign of Nikos Anastasiadis can be ensured through the presence of DISY in a scheme with other political forces.
Mavroyiannis and the Call for Transcendence
DISY President Averof Neofitou put to the vote a text that was said to have been agreed with the President of the Republic and which included voting at will with DISY in opposition. During his closing, Mr. Neofitou spoke of Jews and apostates, noting that he had no problem with the apostates who were before him, and inviting others to come forward as he knew them. According to him, he has his own opinion and will not vote for the whites, demonstrating that his own choice is to vote for Mavroyiannis.
In the meantime, in the wells outside of the Congress, most of the leaders said they would vote for Andreas Mavroyiannis, while Kaiti Cleridou clearly supported him, speaking of the need to overcome, the mayor of Paphos, Faidonas Faidonos, while the former MP also had an intention in favor of Mavroyiannis Rikkos Mappuridis and Ioannis Kasoulidis. Finance Minister Konstantinos Petridis also spoke of the excess, writing in a Twitter post that after the election, DISY will be “an honest, correct, official opposition, no deals/participation in power, self-criticism, cleansing and reconstruction of DISY.” , the alarmists freely decide the 2nd round, I will make my test exit. Mayor Idalio Leontios Kallenos and MP Onoufrios Koullas opposed the candidacy of Christodoulidis.
Emphasis on the position of the opposition
DISY Deputy President Haris Georgiadis characteristically stated that “we forgot what we were talking about Christodoulidis and Mavroyiannis until last Saturday”, stressing that if there is anything left in DISY it is his political authority. For his part, Minister of Transport Yiannis Karousos spoke of the need not to reward the “renegade” and supported the vote at will, as did the Deputy Minister against President Petros Dimitriou. DISY spokesman Dimitris Dimitriou spoke of the historic defeat and said that the vote of conscience is the least wrong decision today, although it does not suit the “party of bold decisions, the party of big changes.” The vote of conscience was the position supported by Michalis Sophocleous, Anastasia Antouzi, Annita Dimitriou, Michalis Hatzipantela and Efthymios Diplaros.
