According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Col. Jorge Eduardo Naime was the target of the fifth phase of an operation launched last month to identify people who participated in, financed or supported the unrest.

Naime, a former local police chief in the Brazilian capital, is suspected of negligence in planning security operations, according to two sources cited by Reuters.

The German news agency notes that it was not immediately possible to contact Naime’s lawyers.

When asked about the case, Brazil’s federal police said it was not releasing the names of those arrested or those under investigation, but confirmed it had carried out new raids in connection with events that took place on January 8, when Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed Congress and smashed it. . The Presidential Palace and the building of the Supreme Court of Brazil.

During the demonstrations, they called on the armed forces to stage a coup against the new president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in elections held last October.

Allegations of a coup in Brazil

Brazilian police also said on Tuesday that they had executed three arrest warrants, one preventive arrest warrant and six search warrants in the federal district where the capital, Brasilia, is located. The mandates were issued by the Supreme Court of the country.

According to the same source, the charges against the suspects include attempted coup d’état and overthrowing the rule of law through violence.

The new raids came after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva openly accused his predecessor of masterminding the January 8 coup late last week.

“Today I know, and I say it loud and clear: this citizen (former President Bolsonaro) was preparing a coup,” Lula said in an interview with local RedeTV on Friday. “I’m sure that Bolsonaro was actively involved in this and is still trying to be involved,” Lula added.

Jair Bolsonaro denied his involvement in the events of January 8.

Jair Bolsonaro has requested a six-month visa extension to stay in the United States, a country he left on Dec. 31, two days before his mandate ends, his lawyers said.
