The US Embassy in Sweden has warned US citizens in the country of possible retaliatory attacks following the burning of the Quran by a far-right politician.
“U.S. citizens are advised to exercise caution when visiting public places frequented by large numbers of people,” said a statement posted on the embassy’s website on Sunday, warning of possible attacks in retaliation for the burning of a Muslim holy book.
“Gathering places, such as places of worship, can be attacked,” the embassy explained, urging citizens to also be careful when they are near diplomatic missions, avoid crowds and avoid anything that might attract the attention of others.
The US has not updated its travel advisory for Sweden and is urging US citizens to take the “usual” precautions in the country.
The Swedish security service was aware of the US warning, spokesman Adam Samara said, but passed on further clarification to the US authorities.
He added that the agency’s assessment to date is that the threat of attacks remains “high” at 3 on a five-point scale.
