Political analysts say Mr. Soylow’s statements and claims do little to help US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s February 20 trip. In fact, they emphasize that in this environment, the attacks and Ankara’s insistence on the embargo on Sweden’s accession to NATO, it is almost impossible to get approval for the modernization of the Turkish Air Force’s F-16 fighters.

For now, the consulates of the United States, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland remain closed.

The German embassy in Ankara cited the risk of retaliation for recent anti-Muslim protests in European countries (Sweden and Denmark), where far-right extremists burned copies of the Koran.

The US has issued a travel advisory advising American citizens visiting Turkey during this time to take extra care.
