Dozens fires still mad at Chilemourning the four who died as at least 140,000 acres of forest were reduced to ashes.
Interior Minister Carolina Toja announced that four people had been killed in their cars in the city of Santa Juana, Biobio, about 500 kilometers south of Santiago.
Two of them were caught in flames on the road and two others died in a car accident while trying to leave the area.
“Dangerous conditions” in the coming days
The government declared a state of emergency in the regions of Biobio and Niuble, where army forces were also deployed to help firefighters.
“Conditions will be dangerous in the next few days,” Toha warned.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric interrupted his summer vacation to visit the affected areas, home to nearly 2 million people. The fires brought traffic to a halt on major highways and many communities were evacuated.
The meteorological service predicts that today in Newble’s capital, Chiyan, the temperature will exceed 38 degrees Celsius. Strong winds will also blow in the region, which can aggravate the situation.
