With free flights to Hong Kong, the autonomous region of China, aiming to attract tourists, has reopened its gates after a long period of lockdown due to strict coronavirus measures.
The former British colony plans to distribute 500,000 tickets through three airlines operating there in three rounds to attract tourists from both mainland China and other countries.
The “Hello Hong Kong” initiative was announced on Thursday, but has been in development for over two years.
Tickets will be distributed among three Hong Kong airlines: national carrier Cathay Pacific, HK Express and Hongkong Airlines.
A total of 500,000 tickets will cost the city administration about 232 million euros.
Travelers wishing to travel to Hong Kong can visit the World of Winners website from March 1st to enter their name in a ticket raffle.
Tickets will be distributed in three phases: March 1 for Southeast Asians, April 1 for Mainland Chinese, and May 1 for the rest of the world.
Some tickets will also be issued to Hong Kong residents, but not before July 1, for travel after three years of restrictions.
