Netanyahu in Paris to pressure Macron on Iran issue

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is leaving for Paris today, where he is expected to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday in the French capital, hoping to rally more French support against Iran’s nuclear program, according to an article on the Al-Monitor website.

The Israeli embassy in Paris said the two leaders will discuss “international efforts to end Iran’s nuclear program.”

Netanyahu, for his part, hopes that Iran’s role in the Ukraine conflict (the Iranian leadership’s decision to supply Russian troops with drones) as well as images within Iran itself (brutal crackdown on protests, dead and captured) will deter the West. from any possible desire to revive the 2015 international agreement on Tehran’s nuclear weapons.

“By playing the Ukrainian card,” Netanyahu hopes to get the West to “consolidate the anti-Iranian front” in return, comments David Halfa of the Paris-based think tank Fondation Jean Jaures.

Netanyahu could, in particular, hope for new, tougher Western sanctions against Tehran, as well as the addition of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to the list of organizations subject to European sanctions.

Countries such as France and Germany have previously been reluctant to impose sanctions on Iran.

But Israel, for its part, which wants to have good relations with Russia because of the Russian military bases in Syria, remains to be seen if it can practically “give” something to the Europeans in return against the Ukrainian background.
