OUR company Toy company Mattel, known among other things for the famous Barbies, made history by creating the first doll with scoliosis.
A doll with scoliosis in a removable corset will join the line of toys featuring Barbie’s younger sister Chelsea, aimed at encouraging children, their normalization and familiarization with the use of orthopedic devices.
In developing the new doll, Mattel worked with neurosurgeon and spine specialist Dr. K. Luka Masizin, who advised the designers throughout the doll’s development.
The 15 cm doll is wearing a pink dress, interchangeable green protection and white shoes.

Mattel Vice President and Head of Toys for Barbie and other dolls Lisa McKnight said: “We believe in the power of representation and strive to create dolls with a variety of looks so that children can see themselves in Barbie – and now in the series. about Barbie’s little sister, Chelsea.”
She says the new series offers more storytelling opportunities, giving children the opportunity to develop empathy and social skills through doll play.
After being criticized in the past for making dolls that are too skinny, the company has created a wider range, now hitting store shelves with wheelchair dolls and oversized dolls, among other things. In 2022, the company also released the first Barbie with hearing aids.
