Prominent Russian journalist Alexander Nevzorov was sentenced in absentia by a Moscow court today to eight years in prison on charges of spreading “fake news” about the Russian military, state media reported.
Russian authorities launched an investigation into Nevzorov last year over social media posts accusing the Russian military of deliberately blowing up a maternity hospital in Mariupol, Ukraine. Moscow denied this claim.
Nevzorov’s wife wrote on Instagram in March that she and her husband were in Israel.
He received Ukrainian citizenship.
It is noted that Kyiv granted Nevzorov Ukrainian citizenship from 2022.
Nevzorov confirmed that he received Ukrainian citizenship in a Telegram message last June.
He also stressed that Russia’s war is a crime of which Ukraine is a victim.
“I am grateful to these people – they gave me a place among them”
“I am on the side of the victim. And I am grateful to those tortured, desperate, bloody people of Ukraine who allowed me to take my place among them,” he said.
