Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to contacts with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, although he does not have a scheduled phone conversation with him, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti on Sunday.

The reaction came after Germany’s chancellor expressed his intention to continue direct talks with Russia’s president to try to take steps to end the war against Ukraine.

“At the moment, there is no agreed discussion (with Scholz) regarding the schedule. Putin was and remains open to contacts,” Dmytro Peskov responded, reports RIA Novosti.

German daily Tagesspiegel quoted Olaf Scholz in an interview published on Sunday as saying: “I will also talk to Putin again on the phone because we need to talk to each other.”

He added: “It is up to Putin to withdraw the troops from Ukraine and end this terrible, senseless war that has already cost hundreds of thousands of lives.”

The last time Vladimir Putin and Olaf Scholz spoke by phone was in early December.
