Berlin’s recent decision to supply Kiev with battle tanks, a major change after weeks of efforts, does not make Germany a direct party to the war in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed, DPA reports, Agerpres writes.
“This is a war between Russia and Ukraine,” the German chancellor said Saturday night during a press conference in Buenos Aires, the first stop of his four-day visit to Latin America.
The fact that Germany provides Kyiv with “financial aid, humanitarian aid or weapons” has not changed that, Scholz added.
Germany will do everything possible to prevent an escalation that would lead to war between Russia and NATO member states, he said. “There is no problem for us. We will do everything possible to prevent this from happening,” he added.
The chancellor’s comments came after German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock’s remarks sparked an uproar in Moscow on Tuesday.
Burbock called for unity among Western allies at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, saying: “We are at war with Russia, not with each other.”

Russian state media used the statement as evidence to claim that Germany and other EU countries are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, which Moscow refuses to call a war.
Meanwhile, the German Foreign Ministry clarified that Berbock’s statements were not intended to present Germany as a belligerent or its allies.

“It depends on Putin”
Olaf Scholz also intends to continue direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to take steps to end the war against Ukraine.
“I will also talk to Putin again on the phone because we have to talk to each other,” the German chancellor said in an interview with German daily Tagesspiegel, which was consulted by DPA before publication on Sunday.
“It is up to Putin to withdraw the troops from Ukraine and end this terrible, senseless war that has already cost hundreds of thousands of lives,” he added.
