Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry will summon Hungary’s ambassador to express its displeasure with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s “absolutely unacceptable” comments about Ukraine, Kyiv said on Friday, Reuters reported.

The announcement marks a new low in relations between the two neighboring countries. Hungary has repeatedly criticized the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, arguing that they have failed to significantly weaken Moscow and instead risk destroying the European economy.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleg Nikolenko, wrote on Facebook that Viktor Orban told journalists that Ukraine is a “no man’s land” and compared it to Afghanistan.

“Such statements are absolutely unacceptable. “Budapest continues its purposeful course to destroy Hungarian-Ukrainian relations,” he said.

“The ambassador of Hungary will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine for a frank conversation. We reserve the right to take other measures in response,” said Nikolenko.

Earlier on Friday, Viktor Orbán said that Hungary would oppose and use its veto power in the event of any EU sanctions against Russia that would affect nuclear energy. Hungary has a nuclear power plant built by Russia, which it plans to expand.
