SAN FRANCISCO. Accounts in facebook and to Instagram former US President Donald Trump the company will reopen Metafollowing their two-year suspension following the attack by supporters on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021. The restoration of Trump’s popular media accounts is expected to speed up his campaign following the announcement that he will run for a second term in the 2024 election. Trump is followed by 34 million people on Facebook and 23 million on Instagram, platforms that have proven to influence public opinion while providing campaign funding for candidates.

The former president’s Twitter account was reactivated in November by the platform’s new owner, Elon Musk. Since then, Trump has not released a message. Free speech advocates say the public should have access to every candidate’s campaign materials. However, critics of Mark Zuckerberg’s company blame Meta for the shortcomings of the platform’s rules.

On Wednesday, the company announced that it had “established new security barriers to deter incorrigible criminals.” If Mr. Trump re-posts inflammatory material, it will be removed and his account suspended for between one month and one year, depending on the severity of the offense,” wrote Nick Clegg, president of international affairs at Meta. Minority rights organizations in the US expressed concern about the decision.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump commented on the reinstatement of the Meta accounts: “This should never happen again to an incumbent president or any other citizen who does not deserve to be the object of vengeful fury.” Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff expressed his opposition to Trump’s return to the Meta platforms: “Trump has caused a standoff. His access to platforms from where he can spread his lies is dangerous.”
