The man, identified as Arthur E., was arrested Sunday after arriving from the United States, prosecutors said in a statement.

He may have been an associate of Karsten L., an employee of the German Foreign Intelligence Service (BND), who was arrested in December on suspicion of spying for Russia.

According to the prosecutor’s statement, Artur E., who is not an employee of the German special services, gave the Russian spy the information he received from Karten L.

An arrest warrant has already been issued for Arthur E., who appeared before a judge at Germany’s highest criminal court on Monday and was remanded in custody, the statement added.

According to the prosecutor, the investigation was carried out in close cooperation with the BND and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

German authorities have warned of a possible increase in Russian espionage, given the standoff between the Kremlin and the West over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
