German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reportedly decided to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other countries such as Poland to do the same, while the US may supply Abrams tanks, Spiegel reported on Tuesday.

A government spokesman declined to comment on the Reuters report. So is the Ministry of Defense.

The decision concerns at least one company of Leopard 2 A6 tanks, which will be delivered from Bundeswehr warehouses, Spiegel reports.

According to the magazine, other allies, for example from Scandinavia, plan to join Germany in supplying Kiev with their Leopard tanks.

According to Spiegel, in the long term, more tanks could be restored to serviceability.

The Biden administration is leaning toward sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine and an announcement could be made this week, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing sources who said the US presidency declined to comment.

The announcement is said to be part of a wider diplomatic deal with Germany, which will see Berlin agree to send fewer of its own Leopard 2 tanks and approve the delivery of more German-made tanks to Poland and other countries.

The compromise was supposed to resolve the transatlantic tank dispute that threatened to drive a wedge between the Allies as the war neared the end of its first year.

In addition, Poland wants to supply Ukraine with German Leopard 2 tanks and has sent an official request on this matter to Berlin. The federal government is now being asked to review it with “due urgency”. But Poland wants more, namely for the EU to pay the shipping costs.

Poland has officially asked the German government to supply Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine. Germany “already received our request,” Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak explained on Twitter, tagesschau.de reports. He also called on the government in Berlin to join the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks.
