British anti-monarchists announced today that they plan to protest during the coronation of King Charles in May, saying the ceremony was a “slap in the face” for most people trying to cope with high inflation.
The Republican organization has announced that it has contacted London police about its plans to hold a peaceful demonstration in Parliament Square, which overlooks Westminster Abbey, where British monarchs are crowned.
“The coronation is a celebration of hereditary power and hereditary privileges, it has no place in modern society,” said the head of the republic, Graham Smith.
“This mindless theatre, worth tens of millions of pounds, is a slap in the face for millions of people trying to deal with the cost of living crisis,” he added.
Yesterday, Saturday, Buckingham Palace announced that the coronation would be celebrated with processions, a concert at Windsor Castle, street parties and illuminations.
Charles, 74, became king in September after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation will take place on May 6th.
Polls have shown a majority of Britons in favor of the monarchy, but the Republican Organization says support is waning.
