Liechtenstein: casino ban referendum

Liechtenstein may be known for its alpine scenery and castles, but the little principality outdoes itself with a somewhat more mainstream tourist attraction: the casinos.

The principality, which is one-tenth the size of London and has a population of 40,000, is home to six casinos, earning it the nickname “Las Vegas in the Alps”.

All six businesses opened in 2017 after a change in the law that legalized gambling.

Since then, the casino has welcomed visitors from Germany, Switzerland and Austria who want to try their luck at “slots”, roulette and poker tables.

But everything will have to be closed if supporters of the casino ban win a referendum on January 29th.

The collection of signatures for the referendum was facilitated by the IG VolksMeinung group, created to stop, as they say, “flooding in the casino.”

Their reasoning behind the proposal for a global “lockout” is that the casino industry threatens to damage the country’s reputation.
