Ukraine’s armed forces denied on Wednesday that Russian forces had taken control of the eastern town of Soledar, and said the intensity of fighting in the area was comparable to that of World War II, with the Russians mostly using Soviet-era weapons, Reuters reported. .

The spokesman of the Eastern Military Command, Serhiy Cherevaty, told Ukrainian television that Ukrainian forces prevented Russian troops from breaking through the front line.

“The city is not controlled by the Russian Federation. “Fierce battles are going on now,” he said. “It’s a difficult situation there.”

He noted that the military command “is now working on how to stabilize the situation with maximum return for the enemy and minimal losses for Ukraine.”

Russia’s Wagner mercenary group said it had taken control of Soledar, a salt town near Bakhmut that is also the scene of fierce fighting as Russia seeks to seize all of Donbas in eastern Ukraine.

“The intensity of the battle near Bakhmut can be compared with the times of the Second World War,” said Serhiy Cherevaty.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the situation on the ground in Soledar.

The Kremlin is in no hurry to declare victory in Soledar

Cherevatiy said Russian forces still have a lot of Soviet-era weaponry and use Soviet armored vehicles with some modernized elements.

“Our partners give us more modern weapons,” he said, adding that Western weapons are more accurate and give Ukraine an advantage.

On Wednesday, the Kremlin called for “no rush” to declare victory in Soledar, while the Wagner mercenary group said it had taken control of the eastern Ukrainian town after months of intense fighting.

“We don’t need to rush. Let’s wait for official statements,” Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov told reporters, at the same time declaring the “momentum in the advance” of Russian troops and praising the “fantastic heroism” of the soldiers.
