Ukraine: Ankara hopes to extend truce for Christmas

Turkey hopes Russia will extend the Christmas truce it has announced over Ukraine, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Saturday.

According to him, Ankara is ready to make every effort to create conditions for dialogue in order to stop hostilities.

“In our opinion, the ceasefire should not last 36 hours, but longer. A unified decision of the parties on this issue has not yet been made, which indicates a deadlock in which the parties to the conflict are,” Kalin told A Haber TV channel.

He added that Turkey will continue its efforts in the coming days to ensure a ceasefire in areas adjacent to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. “Ankara seeks to prevent hostilities and accidents in this zone,” Kalin said.

He did not even rule out that Ukraine would follow Russia’s example on the issue of a ceasefire. “Perhaps, conditions will be created for the second meeting of the negotiators,” said the representative of the Turkish President, recalling the consultations in Istanbul in March last year.

In his opinion, the continuation of the conflict is fraught with new catastrophes and victims, which must be borne by both the parties involved and the forces supporting them. “The idea of a dialogue should be supported both in Russia and Ukraine, and in NATO and the US,” Mr. Kalin said.
