His family business, the Trump Organization, was found guilty of financial fraud by a New York court in early December.

Republican Kevin Brady, a member of the House Budget Committee, warned ahead of the vote against the proposal to make statements mandatory that the release would allow lawmakers to abuse their power to harm political opponents. “While the Democrats insist that their request is not politically motivated, their rush to release the documents in an expedited manner without congressional review shows that their goal is highly political,” the Republican committee said in a statement.

Although the exact date of publication was not known until yesterday, the committee submitted a report on tax returns, as well as an investigation by the federal tax authorities, the IRS.

The committee report is particularly critical of the IRS, which began investigating Trump’s claims in 2019, two years after he took office rather than immediately after his inauguration, and after he refused to disclose what he said to the IRS. The committee also blames the IRS for the delay, lack of resources, and understaffing of the Trump investigation.

The complex financial structure of Trump’s building empire has not been the subject of a major investigation by the IRS, the committee report says.
