Vladimir Putin is determined to win over parts of Ukraine and has no reservations about his aggression, says German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has spoken to the Russian president on the phone more than most other Western leaders since Russia invaded Ukraine.

  • “Every time I talk to Putin, he says very clearly that for him it’s about winning something. He just wants to conquer a part of Ukrainian territory by force,” Scholz said on Saturday.

After Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the German chancellor spoke to the Russian president more than most other Western leaders. The last phone conversation was on December 2 and lasted an hour.

Scholz says that it is not yet known how many Russian soldiers have died on the Ukrainian front, but their number may reach 100,000.

“I saw what cruelty he is capable of”

  • “We saw what cruelty the Russian president is capable of: in Chechnya, where he practically destroyed the entire country, or in Syria. He has no doubts.
  • We have completely different opinions. But I will continue to talk to him because I want to live the moment when it is possible to get out of this situation. And this is impossible without communication,” the German chancellor said.
