Traffic on the Kerch Bridge, which connects Crimea with Russia, was restored on Monday morning after an explosion that severely damaged it in October, Interfax reports.
“During repair work on December 5 at 10:50 a.m., cars were diverted to the right side of the carriageway of the Krymskyi Bridge,” the message to Rosavtodor states.
The agency also reported that traffic remains restricted for trucks, which can use 3 already existing alternative routes to reach Crimea.
“Interfax” reminds that the Russian government instructed to complete the repair of the transport and engineering infrastructure of the Kerch bridge, including the damaged railway, by December 1, 2023.
Britain’s defense secretary also said in an assessment published in November that the Crimean bridge was unlikely to be fully operational again until autumn next year and that repair work would be heavily dependent on weather conditions this winter.
Retaliatory attacks by Russia for damage to the Kerch bridge
The October 8 attack on the bridge disrupted Russian logistics for Crimea and southern Ukraine, reducing Russia’s ability to transport military equipment and troops to the area by rail or road.
A month and a day later, on November 9, the Russian army announced that it was withdrawing from the eastern bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson region, abandoning the only regional capital that it managed to capture after launching a “personal assignment”. operation” on February 24.
Two days after the explosion that damaged the Kerch bridge, Russia launched a wave of massive missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, accusing Ukraine of responsibility for the bridge’s damage.
Russian President Vladimir Putin personally condemned what he called a “terrorist attack” against Russia and promised a tough response.
Since then, Moscow’s forces have continued their campaign of kamikaze missiles and drone strikes against civilian targets in Ukraine, including the country’s energy infrastructure.
