French President Emmanuel Macron did not plan any contact with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin ahead of his visit to the United States next week, the French presidential office said today.
“The president has no contact with President Putin before a visit to the US is on his agenda,” Macron’s adviser told reporters. “His discussions with President Putin are not related to those he may have with (US) President Biden,” he commented.
Macron will arrive in Washington on Tuesday evening for an official visit.
In mid-November, the Elysee Palace reported that Macron would call Putin after the G20, which took place in Indonesia on the 15th and 16th of the month. Then on Wednesday, Macron himself said he expected to talk to Putin “in the next few days.”
The last time the two leaders spoke was on September 11th.
According to Elysée, Macron wants to remind his Russian counterpart of the demands of Paris: to withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine and restore the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
