“NATO will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary. We will not back down,” Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels on the eve of a meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers, which will take place next week in Bucharest.

Stoltenberg emphasized that Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim of aggression and has the right to defend itself, Agerpres notes.

“President Putin is being defeated in Ukraine, and he’s responding with more brutality,” said a senior alliance official, who said “this is a terrible start to winter for Ukraine,” referring to recent Russian bombings targeting critical Ukrainian infrastructure.

“Many wars end in negotiations, but what happens at the negotiating table depends on what happens on the battlefield,” the head of NATO also said, The Guardian notes.

He added that there would be no “lasting peace” if Russia won the war.

Stoltenberg also believes that Finland and Sweden should be welcomed as “full” members of the alliance.
