The website of the European Parliament was down on Wednesday following a cyber attack, just hours after MEPs voted to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, Reuters reported.

“The accessibility of the European Parliament’s website is currently being affected externally due to the high level of traffic from external networks. This traffic is related to a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack,” Jaime Duc, spokesman for the Brussels legislature, announced on Twitter.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, also wrote about the situation on her page, saying that the attack was carried out by a group of Russian hackers.

“The European Parliament is under a sophisticated cyber attack. A pro-Kremlin group claimed responsibility. Our IT professionals counter this and protect our systems. This is after we declared Russia a state that sponsors terrorism,” she emphasized.

“My answer: Glory to Ukraine,” Metsola added.

The European Parliament, which met in plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday, overwhelmingly adopted a resolution declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism and the use of terrorist means, a request that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and other officials have repeatedly made to the West in Kyiv.

In this way, the Brussels legislature followed the example of several European Union states that declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, the latest of which was the Czech Republic.
