“It happened that the air defense forces repelled the attack,” said Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force Command of Ukraine.

“What happened next, whether it was a Russian missile, or whether it was the remains of both missiles that fell, it needs to be verified on the spot. And this is happening now,” he added.

He also recalled the situation at the end of October, when a Russian missile, intercepted by Kyiv forces, fell on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, saying that this Tuesday’s incident is “really resonant”, but it is not the first case of such an accident.

“We are advocating a joint investigation of the incident with the missile that fell in Poland,” said Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the NSDC.

NATO confirms its support for Ukraine

The comments by officials in Kyiv came after the US press reported earlier on Wednesday that President Joe Biden had told NATO allies that the missile that fell on Polish territory came from Ukraine’s air defense system. .

Later, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that the missile that fell on the border with Ukraine was “probably an unfortunate incident.”

“From the information that we and our allies have, it was a S-300 missile manufactured by the Soviet Union, an old missile, and there is no evidence that it was launched by the Russian side. It is likely that it was launched by Ukrainian air defense systems,” he said.

At a press conference held immediately after an emergency NATO meeting called as a result of the incident on Tuesday night, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the same.

But Stoltenberg stressed that Ukraine was not to blame for the incident, and the NATO representative blamed Russia, which, according to him, continues an illegal war of aggression.

Jens Stoltenberg also emphasized that the incident in no way affected the NATO allies’ commitment to continue supporting Ukraine in its “right to self-defense.”
